About
the Book
I
wrote the book because I think the profession deserves a fresh look
from those close to it, those new to it, and from our sponsors,
customers and colleagues. Beyond the Podium is devoted to encouraging
and shaping that look. Many training professionals are locked into
what they do every day, with little time to consider more strategic
options.
But
why write the book now? At long last we bask in the attention of
many of those in charge.Executives are ratcheting up expectations
for training and development. Perhaps they do it because
of the magnitude of the challenges they confront, as they roll out
enterprise systems and new products, create surprising alliances,
seek new customers, and move their operations and aspirations all
over the world. Success depends on their people.
| "Executives
are ratcheting up expectations for training & development." |
Other
executives are turning to us not because of worries, but because
of opportunities. In their view now, human resources and training
professionals can bring new ideas and approaches to the table. Leaders
are compelled by the economic benefits presented by web training,
lured to the plentiful resources that learning portals promise,
and eager to capture and nurture organizational smarts through knowledge
repositories and online conversations. As it dawns on them that
training and development can mean much more than 20 people in a
room with a dynamic instructor, interest quickens.
