Overview
"The messages in Courageous Leadership are delivered in a clear, straightforward way and create a compelling reason for practicing courage. Our associates walked away with easy to implement strategies for demonstrating the three buckets of courage every day."
–Pamela Booker Sr., Director of Learning & Development, Saks Fifth Avenue
Foster a courageous workforce that has the confidence to TRY, TRUST, and TELL Courage is the first virtue of leadership success. Leaders require courage to make bold decisions even when there are dissenters, to say what needs to be said no matter the consequences, and to place their trust in those they manage. Bill Treasurer's Courageous Leadership program introduces a new organizational development practice called courage-building.

Courage is the foundation that everything is built on: leadership, innovation, sales, ethics, and more. If leaders develop skills that are built on a strong foundation of courage, the impact of those new abilities and techniques grows exponentially. However, most organizations do not discuss the value of courage. This workshop is an excellent way to introduce this new practice, whatever sector—private, corporate, government, or nonprofit— person is operating within. The way people behave when they are being courageous can be grouped into three large behavioral buckets. Bill Treasurer calls these The Three Buckets of Courage: Try – Trust – Tell.

Try: The courage of action and pioneering "first attempts"
Associated with:
  • Having initiative
  • Leading
Requires:
  • Overcoming inertia
Risks:
  • Your actions may harm other

Trust: The courage of relying on the actions of other
Associated with:
  • Being receptive and open
  • Following
Requires:
  • Letting go of control
Risks:
  • Other people's actions may harm you

Tell: The courage of "voice" and truth telling
Associated with:
  • Truth telling
  • Asserting one's opinions
Requires:
  • Conviction
Risks:
  • Exposing your opinions may cause you to be cast out of the group

What Does the Courageous Leadership Profile Measure? The Courageous Leadership Profile measures the three different types of courage highlighted in the Courageous Leadership program: TRY, TRUST, and TELL. The results of the Profile help individuals examine how they are courageous, areas in which they could be more courageous, how those impact their professional lives, and how those areas affect those with whom they work. The Assessment The Courageous Leadership Program's 360-degree and self-rated assessments measure the participants' three primary types of courageous behavior. The three types are:

TRY Courage: The courage of initiative or first attempts. This is the courage it takes to attempt something for your very first time. Such courage can be witnessed when someone attempts a new, skill-stretching or pioneering task. This is the type of courage that a leader is referring to when imploring people to "step up to the plate."

TRUST Courage: The courage of openness and vulnerability. This is the courage it takes to form strong human bonds. Trust has been called the glue that holds groups of people together. To be most effective, leaders need to be trusted. That said, leaders need to offer trust, such as when delegating meaningful tasks and resisting the ever-present temptation to micromanage or grab the task back.

TELL Courage: The courage of "voice" or assertiveness. This is the courage to speak openly and candidly, and assuming all of the political risks for doing so. To be most effective, leaders need to provide workers with regular positive and constructive feedback, despite the discomfort this feedback may be for the workers to consider. At the same time, leaders must create an environment that promotes open communication, and actively discourage workers from becoming "yes people" or "kiss ups."
Who is it for? The Courageous Leadership 360-degree and self-rated assessments are designed for anyone who wants to lead and/or participate on a more highly functioning team.
